Recession Related Investment Opportunities

The current global economic downturn is nothing more than a reorganization of wealth.  Whether or not you agree with how and why it is being reorganized is up to you, but there are some ways to really benefit financially in this time of bad news and gloomy profit reports.  Not all investment transactions occur on a computer screen.  Some people collect antiques and build stockpiles of precious metals and other valuable goods.  Right now is one of the best times to get these items at great prices because so many people are looking to turn their possessions into quick cash and are unwilling to do the research and footwork to figure out what their collectibles and tangible investments are really worth.

I’m in way arguing that anyone should try and dupe another person out of something valuable, but when people are facing desperate times, you can find some real deals out there.  It’s the same idea as when a person walks into a used car dealership after recently inheriting their late spouse’s Ferrari and asks a salesperson, “How much will you give me for this?”  Sure they will probably get a paltry few thousand dollars if the car salesperson can swindle them out of the Ferrari, but because of the spouse’s ignorance of the true value of the car, they are setting themselves up to lose.  This is an extreme example, and one that I hope is not reflective of the ideals of American society, but you get the idea.  There are plenty of people out there looking for a few extra dollars in these tough times and by holding garage and estate sales they are able to recoup some of the liquidity of their possessions.  There are some really great deals out there if you start to go to some garage and estate sales and are willing to do your homework.

Another great way to turn an old table or cabinet into cash is to look around your own home.  If you become more informed about what’s in your own possession you are better able to squeeze every last penny out of your investments and collectibles when you sell them.  Instead of the person selling something that they have no idea about and getting taken, you turn the situation around and now have the upper hand as the seller.  There is no better time than right now to do your research if you need to sell some of your possessions.

Great places to go to find or sell antiques and collectibles include garage sales, estate sales, auctions, thrift stores, newspapers and classified advertisements, websites like craigslist or EBay, and even just word of mouth.  You’d be surprised what your neighbor would be willing to part with in a time of need.  There is still plenty of money to be made out there if you just look in the right places.  Even during a recession there are bright spots and right now, collectibles that people are looking to part with is one of those spots.  Happy hunting!
